Two dead in murder-suicide in Ontario County
A Canandaigua couple was found dead in their home last week in what Ontario County sheriff’s deputies deemed an apparent murder-suicide.
According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were called to 5029 Wyffels Road in the Town of Canandaigua on Thursday to check the welfare of the residents. A delivery driver had noticed that delivered packages were piling up outside the home and alerted the authorities.
Deputies arrived on Thursday to find the house locked and the owners’ vehicles on the property. After forcing their way through the door, deputies found the two residents – Priscilla Herbik, 82, and Christian Herbik, 81 – both dead inside the home from apparent gunshot wounds to their upper bodies, said Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione. A shotgun was found near Christian Herbik, he said.
There was no sign of a struggle inside the home, according to deputies.
Following an autopsy with the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office, Priscilla Herbik’s death was ruled a homicide and Christian Herbik’s death was ruled a suicide, according to the sheriff’s office.
Cirencione described the murder suicide as an “isolated incident” that was contained to the couple’s home. “The thoughts of our members remain with the family as they navigate this tragic incident and devastating loss,” he said in a news release.
Wyffels Road is located on the west side of Canandaigua Lake, not far from Hope Point.
