Who is Alex Ovechkin’s wife, Anastasia Shubskaya?

Alex Ovechkin etched himself into NHL history on April 6, 2025, when he surpassed Wayne Gretzky for most goals scored in league history with 865.

Moments after he scored the record-breaking goal in the Capitals’ 4-1 loss to the Islanders at UBS Arena in New York, the 39-year-old Ovechkin was joined on the ice by his wife, Anastasia Shubskaya, and their family for a mid-game ceremony.

Here’s what to know about Ovechkin’s biggest supporter.

She’s a Russian model

Like Ovechkin, Shubskaya hails from Russia, where she made a name for herself in the modeling world.

While she frequently poses for snaps on Instagram, where she boasts more than 500,000 followers, she made plenty of appearances in top Russian magazines before marrying Ovechkin in 2016.

The couple met at the 2008 Olympics

Ovechkin and Shubskaya’s love story began at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, where they met for the first time and exchanged phone numbers.

But it wasn’t love at first sight, as they fell out of touch for years before reconnecting in 2015 when Ovechkin began commenting under her Instagram posts.

This led to direct messages, FaceTimes and the rest is history.

Ovechkin proposed in the shower

Not long after rekindling their romance, Ovechkin popped the question in a unique locale.

In a 2020 interview with The Washington Post, Shubskaya revealed Ovechkin proposed to her while she was showering.

“I was like, ‘What! Do you understand I am just …’ and he didn’t stop, so I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh’ and I got a towel, and I opened the door, and he is on one knee with the flowers and with the ring,” Shubskaya detailed of the memorable moment.

“At first, when I opened the door, I thought I would kill him. Can you imagine you were in the shower and then you need to get out … Why you couldn’t just wait? He said, ‘No, no, no. I wanted to right now.’”

The couple got married in 2016

With shampoo lathered in her hair, Shubskaya said yes to Ovechkin’s marriage proposal.

They certified the proposal in Russia, and then had an intimate, private ceremony a year later.

The celebration was at the Barikvah Concert Hall in Moscow.

Ovechkin and Shubskaya are now parents to sons Sergei and Ilya.

How they celebrated Ovechkin’s historic NHL moment

To cap off Sunday’s memorable road trip, Shubskaya joined Ovechkin at a private party in Washington, D.C., on the night of April 6, 2025.

In footage shared on X, Ovechkin was greeted with two beverages as “Ovi” chants broke out inside the venue while his wife received what looked to be a glass of bubbly.

When Ovechkin broke Gretzky’s scoring record, he expressed gratitude for those who have supported him.

“And the most important thing — to my mom, my family, my beautiful wife, my father-in-law, my beautiful kids: Thank you so much, and without you, without your support, I would never stand here. Love you, guys,” he said in April 2025.
