Three cheers for John Fetterman refusing to toe the Dem party line
What if I told you the most sensible person in Washington, DC, is a tattooed Democrat from Pennsylvania who shows up to work in a sloppy black hoodie?
Two years ago, I would have laughed at such a suggestion.
But post-election, Sen. John Fetterman has continued his metamorphosis into one of the most refreshing politicians of our time â bravely crossing partisan lines to call out nonsense and champion Americaâs bedrock values.
On Monday, he humbled the women of âThe View,â who seem to exist in 2025 simply to henpeck to death anyone who hasnât enthusiastically enlisted in the Trump resistance.
Fetterman patiently dismantled their extremely narrow view â calling Manhattan DA Alvin Braggâs prosecution of Donald Trump politically motivated and defending his own right to execute his job as he sees fit.
He did it without being a hysterical lunatic fishing for social media clout.
And without raising his voice or, I suspect, his blood pressure.
âWhether thatâs a Democrat going after a Republican or a Republican going after a Democrat, I like to think I call it strikes and balls because the judicial system has to remain impartial. Thatâs really the cornerstone of our society,â he said of Bragg, who passed on prosecuting real criminals in the streets of New York City but threw the book at Trump.
âIâm on record criticizing, going after Hunter Biden. And I also agree that the [Trump hush-money] trial in this city, in New York, was politically motivated,â Fetterman said.
Sunny Hostin â one of the shrillest voices of âThe Viewâ â couldnât take it.
âJust for clarification,â she condescendingly said, shaming this man for refusing to toe the party line. âDid you mean that the 34-count case in which Donald Trump was found guilty of various financial crimes was politically motivated here in New York?âÂ
Not to be outdone by haughty Hostin, co-host Ana Navarro chimed in. In the preamble to her lecture, she noted that she had generously supported Republicans Mitt Romney and former Ohio senator Rob Portman working with President Joe Biden. However âŚ
âI didnât love the optics of you going to Mar-a-Lago .. .which is [Trumpâs] palace,â she told Fetterman in her most scolding tone.
Because itâs only Republicans who should meet with Dems in power â not the other way around, you see.
Fetterman, though, was controlled and good humored as he told her that âengaging the president when youâre in this business, thatâs part of the job.â
He described Trump as âkindâ and âcordial,â adding, âIt wasnât any kind of theater. It wasnât trying to get your picture taken to put something out on social media, it was just really a conversation.â
He compared it to Gov. Gavin Newsom, another Democrat, welcoming our president to California to get things accomplished.
Fettermanâs appearance underscored how he is unmoved by team jerseys. And that heâs way more in touch with the American people than the co-hosts of âThe View,â who continue to act like theyâre on a pink pussy hat reunion tour, playing all the hits from 2017.
This man is the normie whisperer of DC. And the beleaguered Democrats, who abandoned governing for virtue signaling, could use some of that normie energy about now.
Even his ridiculous âstyleâ has grown on me. If clothes make the man, Fetterman makes the hoodie.
I admit that when Fetterman, who suffered a serious stroke in 2022, ran for his Senate seat that year, I was horrified that a man so seemingly diminished was off to Capitol Hill.
But he has emerged clear eyed and pragmatic, as evidenced by his unshakeable support of Israel in the wake of the October 7 massacre by Hamas.
And while I know I disagree with Fetterman on certain issues now, and will in the future, Iâll respect his fearlessness in the way he does business. And his willingness to speak to anyone â rather than burrow in his partisan warren, like so many creatures of our swamp.
We need more Fettermans in politics today. But few have his conviction, common sense or, letâs face it, cojones.
