Yankees survive Devin Williams drama to take Opening Day win

No Juan Soto, no problem.

Homers from Austin Wells and Anthony Volpe backed Carlos Rodon’s impressive start as the Yankees held on for a 4-2 win over the Brewers on Thursday in The Bronx.

New closer Devin Williams struggled against his old Milwaukee teammates, loading the bases in the ninth before he recorded an out, but he buckled down to strike out Jackson Chourio and Christian Yelich to end the ballgame.

Rodon went 5 ⅓ frames, striking out seven and yielding one run on four hits.

Wells delivered in his first at-bat as the leadoff man this season, smashing a homer into the right-field bleachers to begin the bottom of the first.

Volpe followed suit in the second with his own solo shot to right.

The Bombers added two in the seventh, one from an Aaron Judge double and another on a Cody Bellinger sacrifice fly.
